Neil Johnson specializes in photo décor for office and home

I began my 40-year professional photography career working out of Shreveport, Louisiana, in 1980 and, since then, have been shooting my beloved state, primarily the Northwest corner, but way, way beyond as a commercial photographer, photojournalist, photo-illustrator/author, and artist. It has been difficult at times for me to distinguish between providing images for commercial clients and my personal joy of simply capturing images that happen to have captured my heart. My personal art and commercial work have long inspired each other in many ways.

In 2020 I decided to end my longtime commercial photography career (serving client image needs) and pursue other passions. I sold my wonderful century-old studio/office building and downsized my photography business to selling images from my massive library for client wall décor and commercial stock use. (Okay, so these are also image needs.)

To be clear, I am not retired. I pivoted by flipping my primary business (commercial photography) with my side career (writing.) I now spend most of my time writing in my home office and use a small office—a few blocks from my old studio—for editing and printing photos.

Again, I am not retired. I am now currently a writer—writing about photography—for the joy of storytelling using the written word, but I will be a photographer for as long as I can lift a camera, shooting for the joy of this magical medium.

The world around us is filled with astounding beauty. I am forever grateful to God for His endless gifts—especially life itself. Our eyes and hearts should remain open to recognize and appreciate these gifts.

Why a purple armadillo?

In 2002 I jumped on a studio photo op of a baby armadillo and named him Felton. The little guy soon “became” (digitally) purple and his name officially became Purple Felton. The image took on a life of its own and His Purpleness became my most iconic photograph. Why a purple armadillo? Why not?
